A Haiku For No One

Voter Apathy
18 October, 2007

When we go to vote,
Do we really have the choice
That we think we do?

The illusion that we do is nice though.

The framers designed it that way on purpose: can't have the unwashed illiterate masses control the government, yet we can't have an unruly lot of malcontents running about stirring up trouble either, so they gave them--US--the inllusion of influence.

Unfortunately the vast majority of the populace is now educated, so the illusion is quite apparent...

Someday, there will be a bunch of unruly educated malcontents running around stirring up trouble. In the interim, voter apathy...

That's my two cents.

Well, I've been waiting for The Revolution. We have a constitutional right to overthrow the government if we feel they're not representing our interests. I think that within my lifetime, there will be an uprising. They can only keep us happy with crappy movies and iPhones and Ellen crying for so long before we wake up. I'll be on the front lines in that one. Shit, now the CIA is probably after me...

I just hope that if there is a revolution, they don't kill all the lawyers first.

I know I tend to go on and on about law school and whatnot, but I took a lot of classes in constitutional law and theory there. There is an ongoing debate about the constitution being a fluid, every-changing document versus a framers-intent theory which asks us to imagine what the framers would have wanted. I am a fluid-theory type. This means that I believe the framers were so ahead of their time that they contemplated the likelihood that their future would contain unimaginable changes and that their precious document had to account for that. I think one thing is sure - Americans don't want blood shed on our soil. Despite our differences, we all are Americans first and foremost.

That said, Jon Stewart for President!
